Activities

All volunteers have the ability to experience hands on activities. These are done on a group rotation system with a minimum of one staff member at all times. This ensures that everyone can be safely involved in the wide range of available experiences. All activities are optional, and include, but are not limited to:

• Preparing food and feeding various wildlife.
-This is a twice a day activity involving food preparation, feeding, and cleaning. It can be a fun, messy, satisfying experience; ensuring the nutritional needs of the animals are met. This is a crucial part in keeping our animals happy and healthy. Volunteers will be handling fruits, vegetables, various meats, along with vitamins and minerals.

• Cleaning and maintaining enclosures.
-This crew comes after the feeding team is done. This way we can ensure the animals are happy and full. Every animal needs to be properly taken care of and respected. Their enclosures, whether temporary or permanent, should be maintained. Many enjoy the ability to interact and play with the animals while cleaning.

• Providing enrichment and exercise.
-The most enjoyable and most hands on experience you get. All these animals need some type of interaction. And we get to provide it! Making fun toys, giving some belly scratches, taking the cheetahs or baboons on walks, going to listen to the lions roar when the sun goes down, it never ends. We are always up for new ideas to help make the animals lives better.

• Building new enclosures, cabins, and facilities.
-At the sanctuary there is always ongoing maintenance, building, and expansion to be done. For those that like a challenge, these are the more labour intensive days. This can include: digging waterholes for animal enclosures, repairing enclosure fencing, constructing new animal enclosures, removing or installing fencing, building cabins and camping facilities, and fence patrolling and maintenance.

• Veterinary medical work.
-There is always veterinary work available to watch and assist with. There is a veterinary team at the sanctuary working on wildlife, domestic, and farm animals 24 hours a day. There is also a clinic in town that treats domestic animals locally. In addition, there is a Veterinary Mobile Unit responsible for locating, rescuing and releasing animals. Volunteers have the ability to observe or even assist in the medical treatment and procedures being done each day.

• Farming and agriculture.
-The sanctuary has a program that provides nearby villages with a farm, greenhouse, or crop field. They are taught how to properly provide for their families and communities with it. As a volunteer you are able to join in any of the on-going projects to see how it is done.

• Game counting and monitoring carnivores.
-Game counts are an important tool in farm management. The monitoring of numbers of species allows us to get accurate representation of the work being done in the sanctuary, and towards conservation in that area. Carnivores in particular are crucial in regulating and maintaining our ecosystem. Volunteers will learn how to appropriately and accurately count and monitor wildlife.

• Photography.
-Spend the day traveling and capturing everything that the sanctuary has to offer.
